Power Flushing

The need for flushing has become more apparent with the introduction of more efficient boilers and also because existing heating circuits have been extended with bad design features or mechanical faults. In hard water areas, the use of water in heating systems invariably results in a build up of lime scale deposits within the system, usually in the highest temperature zones. The resultant scale not only restricts water flow, but acts a very effective insulate, reducing heat transfer efficiency and increasing running costs. Heavy scale deposits can also lead to localized overheating of heat exchanger surfaces, resulting in premature or expensive repairs to the heating appliance.

In all areas, rust and corrosion may take place in the heating system, leading to a build up of corrosive deposits and a reduction in efficiency. More than 60% of the country is affected by hard water but the south is particularly affected by magnesium and calcium which causes lime scale deposits when water is heated, together with corrosion debris and black sludge. In time the carrying capacity of your pipe work will gradually reduce leading to control valves, circulating pump and radiators not working efficiently and finally becoming completely blocked.

We use one of the Kamco range of pumps, a company that has sixteen years experience in this field. The flushing pump is simply connected into the heating system, either to your central heating pump couplings or across the tails of one radiator, or wherever most practicable. The delivery of the full flow from the pump will dislodge and mobilise deposits and corrosion which resist traditional system cleaning methods such as additives to the header tank. Once the corrosion and sludge deposits have been loosened and mobilised, fresh clean water is forced through the heating system, pushing the contaminated water out through a full bore dump valve to waste disposal, normally through a drain or WC. During the flushing process, radiators are individually flushed, without removing or disconnecting them from the system, by directing the full output of the pump through each radiator separately.

At the end of the flushing process, the system contains fresh clean water; a chemical inhibitor is added such as Fernox and the system is bled and reinstated to normal operation. Power flushing central heating systems will:

  • De-scale boilers.
  • Overcome boiler noise and circulation problems.
  • Clean a system with just ONE visit to site.
  • Avoid the need to remove radiators.

The Building Regulations for England and Wales, Part L 2006, now require a central heating system to be cleaned and inhibited chemically with every boiler change. Many boiler manufacturers now make the warranty dependent on flushing and cleaning in accordance with Benchmark and Part L
